Rwanda kicks off a series of events on Monday to mark the 20th anniversary of the genocide. One of the bloodiest dramas of the 20th century claimed more than 800,000 lives, mostly of the Tutsis, but also of the Hutu. France did not participate in the genocide, but its role is still fiercely controversial. These disputes led to France canceling its participation in the ceremony. And on the eve of Rwandan President Paul Kagame for the second time accused France and its soldiers of participation in genocide.
Therefore, all French newspapers, devoting their main materials to the events in Rwanda, write: "sorry". It is a pity, because it is in France that the investigation is underway on the assassination of President Habiryamana, the investigation is independent and fairly well covered in the media. It is in the publications of the French media that it is said that France admitted its indirect guilt, guilt in the fact that the French soldiers not only failed to prevent the massacre, but they were aware in advance of what was being prepared.
Of course, France is responsible, and of course, it must be responsible. But twenty years later, this is not the time to rekindle the passions. So writes the newspaper "Croix", condemning the actions of President Kagame. But at the same time, the newspaper notes that the French authorities should not have refused to come to Rwanda. Because now we should not talk about politics, but about honoring the memory of the victims. The arrival of the French minister in Rwanda would be a "demarche of compassion", difficult diplomatically, but true from the point of view of universal human values. This is exactly what Belgium did, which President Kagame also accused of participating in the genocide.
From all this, the newspaper concludes that France has n Jeans in Rwanda ot yet outlived its dark past, that, despite all the transparency of the investigation conducted in France, much remains unclear. And in the end, the perpetrators have not yet been finally identified and punished.
To this unclear in the case of the genocide in Rwanda returns and the newspaper "Parisienne". She publishes an article in which she reveals the contents of a secret French intelligence document drawn up at the time of the events. This document has not yet been attached to the investigation. It says that the French authorities were aware that the assassination attempt on President Habiryamana was prepared by his inner circle.
The document, drawn up on April 11, 1994, notes that the shot at the presidential plane was fired from a military base where the Rwandan Presidential Guard is located. But then France chose to silence this information, as it endangered its allies. The fact that the assassination of the president led to genocide, France could not know, but assume, - the newspaper concludes. France then remained silent, and this is precisely its fault.
The Liberation newspaper went further than the rest in its accusations against France. She publishes an interview with Rwandan President Paul Kagame, who says: "Paris was involved before, during and after the genocide." This quote from Paul Kagame became the title of the article. Without giving specific details, President Kagame says that France, first of all, established an ideology in Rwanda, which then allowed genocide.
Many of the participants in this massacre later found refuge in France. And if an official investigation is underway in France, and even there was one trial, as a result of which one of the Rwandan officers received 25 years in prison, then this is not enough. “Just one trial in twenty years! (…) When justice is so slow, we cannot help but believe that it is intentional, ”says Paul Kagame.
